Two to three times a year, Museum Ordrupgaard presents special exhibitions that relate to the museum’s collection. On this tour, our experienced art educator guides you through the special exhibition for an hour of in-depth exploration. Discover the themes in greater detail and get up close to selected works. Please note: tours of the special exhibition are not offered during the final two weeks of the exhibition period.

Bring your own art guide along to explore Museum Ordrupgaard’s exceptional collection of French art. 

The collection begins with Romanticism and spans early Realism and the Barbizon School, culminating in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces. Here, you will encounter works by artists such as Morisot, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Gauguin, and Matisse, housed in Snøhetta’s 2021 building—a structure that, like a jewel box, holds this unique collection of both oil paintings and rare pastels.

On this tour, we take a close look at works by Vilhelm Hammershøi and his contemporaries. Museum Ordrupgaard’s founders, Wilhelm and Henny Hansen, were among the first collectors of art by Hammershøi and L.A. Ring; consequently, the museum holds a particularly rich collection of works by these two artists. They also collected works by the Funen Painters and the ‘Danish Impressionist’ Theodor Philipsen. During the tour, we examine selected masterpieces and discuss the major artistic breakthroughs that took place around 1900.

The tour encompasses everything from French Impressionism and Hammershøi to ceramics and Danish works displayed in the grand manor house. Prepare to be surprised!

On this tour, you will gain insight into the architecture of Museum Ordrupgaard, which provides the setting for the museum’s exceptional collection and rotating special exhibitions. The tour takes a closer look at the grand Ordrupgaard estate, Zaha Hadid’s building, and the Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta’s Himmelhaven (Sky Garden)—structures that together offer a unique glimpse into the architectural and cultural history of the past century.

Who says art has to hang quietly on a wall? In The Art Park, you can touch, climb, crawl, play, and dance among works created by the greatest contemporary artists. Dodge the water jets in Jeppe Hein’s water pavilion, climb around in Doug & Mike Starn’s giant bamboo maze, and jump through Olafur Eliasson’s magical ring of mist, which envelops the park in fog when the wind shifts. Our art guide will tell you about the park’s history and show you around all its secret nooks and crannies.
